Events That Effected British Cinema

Gordon Brown had taken over as priminster of the uk after Tony Blaire unlike Tony, Gordon was disliked by the people due to lack of charisma and the labour party being blamed for British involvement in Iraq after following the Americans which cost the lives of many British soldiers.
This may explain the release of films like Hot Fuzz (2007) which was a satirical comedy of police in England in a time were government officials were seen as not knowing what they were doing (Gordon Brown).
Due to the labour government many changes where made in paramount that effected the working class like; The Welfare Reform Act (2007)

Changes to provision of Housing Benefit

Origianlly housing benefit is sent directly to landlords, not the tenants. The Act changed this so that rent money is paid to the tenant who will then be expected to pay this to the landlord. One of the stated motivations for this change is that it will give tenants an appreciation of the sums involved in their benefit claims and this will foster greater social responsibility. Criticism of this change has focused on vulnerable people such as drug addicted people and those with mental health problems
The Act also introduces a housing benefit sanction for those who are found guilty of anti social behaviour; benefit can be withdrawn and/or the tenants can be evicted.

Abolition of Incapacity Benefit

The Act replaces Incapacity Benefit with a new benefit, Employment and support allowance. The new benefit will require that regular effort is made by (non-exempted) claimants to seek work or take part in work-related assessments and regularly meet with an advisor. Those failing to do so may see a reduction of their benefit.

Older people and single mothers

The stated aims of the legislation were to increase the numbers of older people (50+) and single mothers in employment - two groups that face particular difficulties in returning to work.

Changes like this in parliament caused film like Fish Tank (2009) which commented on the working class and living in poverty through the social realism genre.

Other Events

Global financial crisis/stock crash in 2008 caused cash in housing markets and worldwide debt causing worldwide debt due to American companies on wall street stacking loans and debts and hiding them in accounts/loans that put people in debt.
